About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and certified Medical Coder – Inpatient (IP) to join our Operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing clinical documentation, assigning accurate medical codes, and ensuring claims are submitted in compliance with coding guidelines, payer requirements, and regulatory standards. This role plays a critical part in facilitating timely reimbursement and maintaining coding quality and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze inpatient medical records and claims for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and/or USCLS codes based on clinical documentation and official coding guidelines.
- Audit claims to verify medical necessity, insurance coverage, and coding accuracy before claim submission.
- Communicate with physicians and healthcare providers to clarify incomplete or ambiguous documentation through the Physician Query Process.
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) teams and healthcare providers to enhance medical record quality.
- Process and review claims across Direct Claim (DC) and Inpatient (IP) scenarios.
- Ensure compliance with payer contracts, billing regulations, and authority guidelines.
- Identify coding and billing issues and escalate concerns to supervisors as required.
- Monitor denial trends and apply coding best practices to minimize claim rejections and payment delays.
- Generate coding-related reports and support compliance, quality improvement, and operational initiatives.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding regulations, industry updates, and payer-specific requirements.
- Adhere to AHIMA Code of Ethics and organizational compliance standards.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the line manager based on operational requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences or a related healthcare field.
Certifications
Candidates must hold one of the following recognized coding certifications:
AAPC Certifications
- CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
- COC (Certified Outpatient Coder)
- CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder)
AHIMA Certifications
- CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
- CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-Based)
- CCA (Certified Coding Associate)
Certification must be accepted by DHA/MOH regulatory requirements.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in medical coding and insurance claims processing.
- Minimum 2 years of UAE healthcare and insurance claims experience.
- Strong understanding of inpatient coding methodologies and reimbursement processes.
- Experience with DRG coding will be considered an advantage.
- Proficiency in coding software, Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, and healthcare information systems.
